Spring into Fun: Holiday Riding Activities for Kids!

Spring into Fun: Holiday Riding Activities for Kids!

Team GS |

The school holidays are here, and it's the perfect time to add some excitement to your kids' riding routine. Here are some engaging activities to make their time in the saddle extra special:

Pole Playtime!

  • Patterned Poles: Set up poles in various shapes and patterns. Challenge riders to navigate these courses, improving their accuracy and control.
  • Tunnel Trails: Create tunnels using poles or jump wings. Riders can practice riding through these tunnels, focusing on straightness and balance.
  • Scattered Poles: Scatter poles around the arena and have riders ride to and over them, this helps with awareness and responsiveness.

Transition Time!

  • Countdown Transitions: Use a simple countdown (3, 2, 1!) to cue transitions. This adds a sense of anticipation and makes the exercise more engaging.
  • Target Transitions: Place markers or cones at specific points in the arena. Call out a transition, and the rider must perform it before reaching the marker.

Games in the Arena!

Games are a fantastic way to develop skills and build teamwork. Here are a few ideas:

  • Color Command Game:
    • Call out different colours, each corresponding to a specific movement (e.g., "Red" = halt, "Yellow" = walk, "Green" = trot).
  • Musical Markers:
    • Play music and place cones or markers around the arena. When the music stops, riders must race to a marker.
  • Scavenger Hunt:
    • Create a scavenger hunt with items found around the stable or arena (e.g., "something soft," "something shiny," "something green").
  • Bucket Challenge:
    • Fill buckets with water and toss in small toys or objects. Riders must dismount, retrieve an object with their teeth, and remount.
  • Sammy Snake:
    • Set up the Sammy Snake course (three-loop serpentine) using poles. This teaches riders how to navigate a serpentine pattern.

Tips for Holiday Fun:

  • Ensure all activities are safe and appropriate for the riders' skill levels.
  • Supervise children closely, especially during games involving dismounting and remounting.
  • Incorporate fun decorations and music to enhance the atmosphere.
  • Remember to keep the ponies happy and comfortable.
